Lyon humiliated Monaco in a
disastrous start to the new French Ligue 1 season on Friday night.
After their narrow escape from being relegated last season, Les
Monegasques are hoping for much better this season, but a 3-0 defeat was an ill-fated
beginning for the home side on Friday.
Just five minutes into the game, Monaco found themselves behind when
Bertrand Traore's cross was headed in by Moussa Dembele.
Cesc Fabregas was shown a red card in the second half of the
game. The midfielder had originally been shown a yellow card for a foul on Leo
Dubois but the decision was referred to VAR. The verdicts given was based on Replays
which showed Fabregas had raked his studs down the back of Dubois' leg and the
card was upgraded to red.
Six minutes later more damaged
was hammered on Monaco, this time involving goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, who
was making his debut after signing from Montpellier.
Lecomte let a long-range effort from Memphis Depay deflect in
off his legs.
Lyon continued to press in
the second half of the game and got a well deserved third goal 10 minutes from
time when Lucas Tousart drilled in from outside the box to make it a hugely
satisfactory first match in charge for boss Sylvinho.
