Bayern confirms the Signing Of Japan Defender Ito From Stuttgart Until 2028

Bayern Munich announced on Thursday the signing of Japanese centre-back Hiroki Ito from Stuttgart, with the player committing to a contract until 2028 after the club reportedly triggered his €30 million ($32 million) release clause.

The 25-year-old Ito, who joined the Bundesliga just two seasons ago from Japanese side Jubilo Iwata for less than one million euros, is Bayern’s first major signing of the transfer window.

“It’s a great honour for me to be able to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Ito said in a prepared statement. “I want to play my part in FC Bayern winning lots of trophies.”

Primarily a central defender, the left-footed Ito can also play as a left-back or in defensive midfield. During his time at Stuttgart, he played 97 matches and scored twice.

“Hiroki has everything that we want: he’s a player who embraces challenges, overcomes them, and continues to make his way,” said Bayern sporting director Max Eberl. “He’ll really strengthen us right away.”

Ito played a crucial role in Stuttgart’s remarkable turnaround last season, helping the team rise from relegation candidates to finish in the Champions League spots. Under Sebastian Hoeness, Stuttgart finished second behind champions Bayer Leverkusen, placing above Bayern, who missed out on a trophy for the first time in 12 seasons.

Ito made his debut for Japan in 2022 and has since earned 19 caps, scoring one goal.
