Luka Modric Signs One-Year Extension with Real Madrid

Real Madrid captain Luka Modric has signed a new one-year contract to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu for the upcoming season, the European champions announced on Wednesday. The 38-year-old midfielder’s contract now extends until June 30, 2025.

Modric has enjoyed a highly successful career with Real Madrid, winning six Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, and lifting the Copa del Rey twice.

Despite starting only 37 times in the past two league seasons, Modric remains a crucial player for coach Carlo Ancelotti. Last term, he played a vital role in helping Los Blancos achieve a Champions League-La Liga double.

Modric recently became the oldest goalscorer in European Championship history, scoring for Croatia against Italy at Euro 2024. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent the 2018 World Cup runners-up from exiting at the group stage.

“I’d like to keep playing forever, but there will probably be a time I’ll have to hang up my boots,” Modric said after Croatia’s 1-1 draw with Italy, which resulted in their elimination. “I’ll keep playing on; I don’t know for how much longer.”

The announcement of Modric’s extension follows the presentation of new star signing Kylian Mbappe to Madrid fans, following his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid will begin their league title defense at Real Mallorca on Sunday, August 18.
