Bruno
Labbadia, a seasoned German football coach, has been named the new head coach
of Nigeria’s men’s national team, the Super Eagles.
The
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the announcement on Tuesday morning
after an extensive search for a new leader for the former African champions.
The NFF confirmed in an official statement that Labbadia has accepted the role
and will begin his duties immediately.
The
statement from the NFF reads: "The Nigeria Football Federation has reached
an agreement with German tactician Bruno Labbadia to become the Head Coach of
Nigeria’s Senior Men’s National Team, the Super Eagles. NFF General Secretary
Dr. Mohammed Sanusi announced on Tuesday that the NFF Executive Committee has
approved the recommendation from its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to
appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles, effective
immediately."
The
Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since the departure of former
Ajax winger Finidi George, who had a short stint in the role.
Who is Bruno Labbadia?
Labbadia,
a former striker, had a notable playing career with clubs such as FC
Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen, and Bayern Munich. He won the DFB-Pokal with
Kaiserslautern and the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, earning two caps
for the German national team before retiring in 2003.
Transitioning
quickly into coaching, the 58-year-old has managed several German clubs,
including Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV, and Wolfsburg. His most recent
coaching position was with VfB Stuttgart, where he took charge in December 2022
but was dismissed in April 2023 after the team slipped to the bottom of the
Bundesliga table.
Labbadia’s first challenge as the new head coach will be leading the Super Eagles in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda next month.
