The Confederation
of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that the eighth edition of
the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will take place from February 1 to 28,
2025, in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. CAF president Patrice Motsepe made the
announcement on Monday.
CHAN is a biennial
tournament that features only locally-based players, excluding international
stars who play in European leagues. This year marks the first time a
continental football competition for national teams will be hosted in East
Africa, setting the stage for the region to also co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of
Nations.
Motsepe, after
visiting three Kenyan stadiums set to host the event—two of which are currently
under renovation—expressed optimism about the preparations:
"I’m impressed with the commitment shown by the three countries, which
gives each of them the opportunity to enhance their football infrastructure,
attract thousands of visitors, and boost their tourism," said Motsepe
following a CAF Executive Committee meeting.
Qualifying matches
for the 19-team tournament are set to begin on October 25 and will conclude in
December.
Senegal is the reigning champion, having won the 2023 CHAN edition after defeating Algeria 5-4 on penalties in the final. Morocco and DR Congo have each won the tournament twice since its inception in 2009.
