Conor Gallagher and Julian Alvarez
both opened their goal accounts for Atletico Madrid as Diego Simeone's side
cruised to a 3-0 victory against Valencia on Sunday. Antoine Griezmann also
found the net, helping the Rojiblancos maintain their unbeaten start to the
season at their Metropolitano stadium.
Atletico Madrid now sit level on 11
points with second-placed Real Madrid and fourth-placed Villarreal after five
fixtures.
Gallagher, who joined Atletico from
Chelsea this summer, broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, slotting home after
a clever nutmeg pass from Rodrigo de Paul. Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak
praised the England international's contribution, saying, "Conor had a
great game, he adds a lot of intensity to the match."
Atletico continued to dominate in the
second half, and Griezmann doubled their lead in the 54th minute. Marcos
Llorente's cross found Samuel Lino, whose misjudged effort bounced off his
shoulder, allowing Griezmann to react quickly and tuck away his second goal of
the season.
Simeone introduced Julian Alvarez as a
second-half substitute, and the summer signing from Manchester City sealed the
win with a late goal, his first in five appearances for Atletico.
Atletico Madrid will now turn their attention to Thursday's Champions League opener against RB Leipzig. Reflecting on the win, Simeone emphasized the importance of maintaining focus: "When you win, everything is good, but what’s important is the game ahead—Thursday, and after that, another game. We have to go game by game, win as many as possible, and hope that takes us where we want to go."
